Guideline Quigley Cripple Baetis

The Quigley Cripple was developed by Bob Quigley* in the late 1970’s for Northern California’s Fall River, a flat and clear river where the trout have plenty of time to study the fly.

t’s a half-in half in-out imitation of a crippled mayfly dun trapped in the surface, however we also think it's a great emerger pattern.

The abdomen have the look of the nymph and the thorax has the colors and features of a dun.

Materials in abdomen soak up water/penetrate the surface so that the fly is floating on the thorax.

This pattern imitates a crippled mayfly, which sits half in the surface film and half on the water.

The thorax has the colours and characteristics of a dun and the abdomen has the appearance of a nymph.

Range of use:
We have adjusted the colors on our range of Quigley's to match the most popular species of mayflies found in europe.

This pattern is ideal for rivers such as the South England, Normandy and Eastern France chalk-streams and similar clear, slow-flowing waters found in Brittany, Ireland, Central Europe and Scandinavia.

Anecdote
* I have been extremely honored to meet Bob and fish with him, drifting Fall river down Rick's lodge (now named Quigley Lodge) during Trico hatch back in 1989 when I was living in San Francisco bay area.

I was a young passionate wild trout dry fly angler, and during that hot and sunny day, I learnt more than in years on my home brittany wild brown trout rivers.

Bob was a real fantastic guide and he introduced me to his fabulous super imitative and effective innovative fly patterns such as the Quigley Cripple, that I brought back in Western France and many European rivers and had such great success with since then on super selective wild brownies.
