FMF Juglaret's Red Flash Mayfly Imago

FMF Juglaret's Red Flash Mayfly Imago

NEW FOR 2026

This mayfly pattern is an imago-stage imitation, designed to target fish feeding on adult insects while maintaining a very low-riding profile on the water.

Pardo rooster tail fibres ensure a low, surface-level and extremely stable floating posture.

The natural CDC wings are highly visible, and their separation with fluorescent pink floss makes this fly easy to track, even in very low light conditions.

A red tinsel flash adds an inciting trigger point to this otherwise highly realistic pattern, helping to tempt hesitant fish in clear water and under bright, sunny conditions.

FMF Juglaret's Red Flash Mayfly Imago is available in three sizes, #16, #18 & #20 to closely match the current hatch.

The Juglaret’s Red Flash Mayfly Imago is a highly accurate imitation of mayflies in their terminal imaginal stage, engineered to replicate the body posture, surface tension interaction, and visual stimuli exhibited by real insects drifting on the water film.
Its design combines carefully selected natural materials to offer optimal hydrodynamic stability, entomological realism, and visual performance.

Functional morphology and biomimicry
The low, semi-submerged profile accurately reproduces the typical position of a mayfly transitioning from subimago to imago.
Coq Pardo tail fibers provide three-point stability, preventing rotation while maintaining the proper float angle.
This structural arrangement complies with the Young–Laplace law governing surface tension, ensuring a natural and hydrodynamically faithful water-air interface.

Optical structure and visual perception
Natural CDC wings, divided by a fluorescent pink thread, serve a dual purpose: enhancing visual detection for the angler, even under backlit or low-light conditions; preserving visual discretion for fish, which are less sensitive to red wavelengths.
This balance results in maximum human visibility without compromising the biological credibility of the imitation.

Chromatic signal – Predation trigger
A subtly integrated red tinsel acts as a focal stimulus, imitating a vulnerability or fatigue marker in the insect.
This visual cue triggers reflex strikes in selective fish species, especially under bright light and in clear, low-turbulence waters, by exploiting contrast-based feeding responses.

Field performance
Optimized for mayfly hatch situations mainly Baetis, Serratella (ignita), and related genera, this pattern performs best in calm currents and smooth glides, where precise presentation and silhouette fidelity are critical.
It stands as a benchmark in entomological fly design, specifically engineered for selective trout behavior in transparent water conditions.
