Sheelin Spent Mayfly (Mc Teare) Barbless

This lovely spent was designed by Stuart Mc Teare who ran a fantastic fishing lodge in Finea in the 1990s.

It is a tried and tested model on Lough Sheelin and on the vast majority of trout waters where May Fly Spent is part of the menu.

The Sheelin Spent Mayfly (Mc Teare) is tied on a barbless hook.

Advice for use
Spent gnat fishing is a great time for fly fishermen on the great lakes of the Republic of Ireland, West, (Loughs Leane, Mask, Corrib, Carra, Conn, Cullin, Arrow, Melvin), Midlands (Loughs Ree, Derg and Ennell) and North East (Lough Sheelin) and Ulster (Lough Erne).
Once the mating cycle is complete with aerial coupling in spectacular pendular flights, the mayflies lay their eggs in the surface film of the lakes (and rivers) and then die, floating on the surface, wings flat, gathered in large numbers, often thousands, by the play of currents and wind.
They are easy and numerous prey for the trout which come to suck them delicately.
The fishing action, which is very discreet in terms of the approach, the presentation and the finesse of the rigs, generally takes place at dusk and lasts as long as there is still some light in the sky.

It is then crucial to have a selection of the best spent gnat imitations.

Northern Irish fly tyer Frankie McPhillips produces the best of the best in the market for this type of fishing with half a dozen original and traditional versions, used successfully by the lough fly fishing community in Ireland.

A must for those who love Ireland and its beautiful lake trout.
