Coch-y-Bonddu Beetle FMF

The Coch-y-Bonddu imitates both aquatic beetles and terrestrial species that have fallen into a stream.

The name is Welsh in origin and translates roughly to “red and black”, which describes a common terrestrial beetle of the UK that the fly imitates (Phyllopertha horticola).

The Coch-y-Bonddu beetle isn't about for long, but when it hatches the fishing can be epic!

This small beetle usually hatches through May and June depending on the weather, usually from grassy banks.

Adults beetles love oak and hazel leaves, so this is a major imitation to have in your box if you fish in streams edged by these essences.

Brown trout and Rainbow trout both gorge on the Coch Y Bonddu, and this foam backed version is a great pattern to fish as a dry fly when they are on.
