Fly reels

Brittany Fly Shop - Our fly fishing reels

The fly reel is a key element in balancing the rod and meeting the specific requirements of your fishing: weight, spool diameter and width, finish, capacity, progressiveness and braking strengh to suit your budget, your level of expertise and the specific characteristics of the fish you're after.

We offer a wide range of reels for salmonid fishing in rivers, lakes and reservoirs, for predators, for European sea bass and for tropical fishing. We stock a wide range of models for all types of fly fishing, from the lightest and most delicate (line weights #2 to 3) to heavy tropical saltwater fly fishing (line weights 12 to 15).

Choosing the right reel is essential. It must be adapted to the line used: the capacity of reels is most often compatible with several line numbers/weights, by varying the diameter and length of the backing, the line reserve placed at the rear of the line for handling fast fish that swim out more than the length of the line, generally migratory salmonids (salmon, sea trout, steelhead) and saltwater species.

Filling the reel with backing also plays an important role in increasing the diameter of the reel hub, the retrieve ratio per crank revolution and limiting the memory of the synthetic line.

All fly reels have a specific capacity that references each model in its range. For example 2/3, 4/5, 6/7, 7/9, 9/11, etc.

The fly reel must also be adapted to the size and power of the fish being targeted and to the environment for which it is intended: saltwater or freshwater.

The weight of the fly reel is also a major criteria. It must balance your rod perfectly so that its dynamic potential, its action, is maximised, without generating fatigue or vibrations in the wrist, arm, elbow or shoulder.

The frequency of the casting action should also be taken into account. Lightness will obviously be the overriding concern for fishing where casts are repetitive or long-distance: dry fly fishing in rivers, euro nymph or French nymph fishing, streamer fishing in reservoirs, european seabass prospecting, tropical shore fishing.

For sight-fishing for ultra-fast marine fish species such as bonefish, tarpon and permit, or spot-fishing for tuna, trevally and blue-water species (billfishes), weight is not the main consideration, as in the end you cast very little. It's backing capacity and braking performance that are more important.

Models with a frame, spool, mechanism and wear parts reinforced by the nature of the materials used (aluminium, titanium, carbon discs, Teflon, composites) and an anti-corrosion treatment (stainless steel) are particularly designed for fishing in marine environments where the constraints are maximum: marine corrosion, fish power, possible impacts on rocks or in a boat.

Finally, it must have a look you like. The quality brands we offer have elaborate, sober, modern designs and impeccable finishes.
