Wading, walking in the water or fording (pêcher à gué) as our friends in Quebec say, is often the only way to reach the best spots and the most beautiful fish in most rivers, lakes, ponds and coastal areas.
It is also often the only way to fish certain waterways with wooded or rugged banks, making it difficult, if not impossible, to cast your line. Wading is also necessary when the banks are steep or too open to hide from the fish.
Whether you are moving upstream to fish (dry fly, nymph fishing) or downstream (wet fly, streamer, salmon fishing), wading is the best way to approach and present your fly correctly to ensure an effective hook set and allow you to manage the fight properly (you often have to follow the fish over long distances) in order to come out on top and slide it in the landing net in the best possible conditions.
You need to be able to rely on waders that are comfortable, sufficiently flexible, completely waterproof, but breathable to withstand long approach walks and/or summer conditions.
Waders are also subject to abrasion from obstacles in the riverbed and on the banks (rocks, wood, various vegetation) and must be made of materials suitable for these conditions and reinforced in the most exposed areas: legs, knees, seat, ankles and feet.
