*Shuttlecock type flies are essential for fishing lakes and reservoirs where feathery chironomids emerge.

Just before its metamorphosis into an adult winged insect, also known as a buzzer or midge, the larva that has ascended in the water column from the bottom substrate where it lived to the surface film, remains motionless for a while, as if suspended in the film.

The Shuttlecock rig with its duck-bottom wing keeps the insect's abdomen in a vertical position, curved downwards, while making it visible to the angler. When trout are sitting on the surface on emerging chironomids, they produce very delicate rises and it is necessary to anticipate the trajectory of the fish to present the imitation.

The Quill Owl Cul is widely used as an imitation chironomid.

It is most effective when fished on a thin tippet and gently presented to stillwater trout.

Advice for use:
Fine and delicate fishing in sheltered areas in lakes and reservoirs when the buzzers are hatching.

It is necessary to regularly dry and waterproof the CDC wing with a sheet of amadou and then fluid floating products specially dedicated to CDC fibres such as Lochsa from Loon or products from the TMC or High N Dry range.

Recommended tippet diameters: 0.117mm (6.5X) to 0.148mm (5X) (type TroutHunter Fluorocarbon and Nylon Tippet, Rio Fluoroflex Plus Strong, Fuling Mill World Class)

Rod weights: #5 to #6.

Best periods: Spring, summer and autumn fishing for rainbow and brown trout in lakes and reservoirs (April to end of November)
